A tribute to Begum Akbar Jehan Abdullah, (wife of Sheik Muhammad Abdullah, the first Chief Minister of Kashmir after the Indian Partition.)

The 11th of July saw a celebration to mark the works of one of Kashmir great woman leaders, Begum Akbar Jehan Adbullah. She was not only a mother  and a great support for her husband but took the role of leading his political party when Sheik Abdulla was imprisoned. She also founded and ran Kashmris first center to help downtrodden / low income women to learn a trade and earn an income. Her work with the refugees of Partition, especially caring for the women who endure violence, earned her he name of ' The Kind Mother." She also worked very hard to preserve Kashmir pluralistic culture by working to bridge the divide between Hindu and Muslim.
I just read a wonderful and inspiring article on her by her granddaughter, Dr. Nyla Ali Khan and thought you may like to also get a glimpse into Begam's life, also be inspired by her and have a taste of Kashmirs history.
